Alexis Lang scored 17 points in the second half to lead the visiting Whites Creek girls to a 42-37 win over M.L. King in a District 10-AA game Tuesday night.
Lang hit a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to give the Lady Cobras the lead at 17-15, then scored on three fast breaks later in the quarter to keep Whites Creek (7-1, 2-0) in control. She finished with 21 points.
"We saw they were penetrating and sending their guards to the boards, so we told our guards to release," Whites Creek coach Antoine Buchanan said. "We got some good looks and easy baskets."
"I told the girls that the keys would be rebounding and runouts," M.L. King coach Lindy King said. "We were getting outrebounded early, so we told our guards to follow the shots and get some offensive boards. But they sent Lang back and got four or five runouts."
The Lady Royals (4-1, 2-1) started slowly, but Sydney Sims and Jordan Majors led a comeback to tie the score at 14 at halftime. Sims, who led M.L. King with 15 points, scored all eight of her team's points in the second quarter. Majors finished with 11 points and seven blocked shots.
"We got intimidated early," King said. "Somewhere in the second quarter we realized we could play with them."
Sims hit a 3-pointer from the corner with just under a minute to play to pull the Lady Cobras within 37-35. But Lang hit three free throws and sealed the victory for Whites Creek.
