Mt. de Sales Approves Move to GHSA

8:37 PM, Jan. 24, 2013 EST

The Board of Trustees of Mount de Sales Academy voted Thursday night to apply for membership to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA).

If the GHSA accepts the school's application this spring, Mount de Sales would begin literary and athletic completion in the GHSA with the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.

The decision by the Board came after an intensive four-year study that included input from all constituents associated with Mount de Sales Academy according to school president David Held.

Held said the Board's decision was based "on our belief that a move to GHSA is very much in keeping with our mission as a Catholic School sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and will provide greater opportunities for our students."

Held said the school was grateful for the years the Academy spent as a member of the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) and continue to have great respect for the outstanding independent schools that make up that association.

The move would mark a return to the GHSA. They won football state championships in the GHSA in 1970, 71 and 73 and captured eight GHSA baseball state titles between 1966 and 1980.
