Athlete of the Week: Kate Giddens

5:01 PM, Nov. 20, 2013 EST

Now Kate Giddens is prepping for basketball season. But her attention to detail in the classroom and exceptional work ethic has made her our Athlete of the Week.

In front of family friends and classmates Kate Giddens inked a deal with the University of Illinois, that will pay for the next four years of her education.
But the senior will tell you, the big smiles, the cake and the photographs are great, but she put in a lot of hard work to get to this moment.

"Kids don't realize how much you really have to give up in order to get a scholarship, Kate explained. You give up a lot of that free time hanging out with your friends."

But she did spend hours and hours with teammates on her high school softball team and her travel ball team.
Giddens is a slugger, she belted out a 340 batting average this season.
It's why Illinois came-a-callin.

"They recruited me as a hitter because I hit home runs and I'm just like a power hitter," Kate said with confidence.

Coach Kori Pickowitz says Giddens achieved a bit of notoriety as a Trojan on her home field when she belted one out of the park.

"They call it the big green monster because nobody had been able to defeat the big green monster. Well Kate defeated that big green monster this year and what a moment it was for her," Pickowitz said.

You might say Giddens is a monster in the classroom.
She loves physics class and figures those skills will come in handy down the road.

"I'm thinking about majoring in physical engineering because I'm kind of good at math so that's my main focus," Kate said.

"She is what I like to call a master juggler. At this point she's learned to juggle her school grades obviously with a 3.94, her extracurricular activities, you know she's involved all over this school," Pickowitz bragged.

Giddens is in the National Honor Society, The Beta club and she was the homecoming queen.
The teenager says she's not happy if there aren't ten things going on at once.

"I do a lot better under pressure, she admitted. Time management is a big thing that I think kids don't realize you have to work on."

She's jammed a lot in during her time as a Trojan and looking back Giddens is grateful for every opportunity, even if she had to make some of those social sacrifices along the way.

"But its worth it in the end and I'm so thankful I did it in the long run," Kate said with a smile.
