Athlete of the Week: Jessika Weiss

1:34 AM, Feb. 01, 2013 EST

Jessika Weiss has been making a splash into the world of swimming all of her life.

"My mom actually placed me in swim lessons", says Weiss. "I think it was a way to get me into sports, because I was trying all these different sports but it wasn't working out. She wanted me to try something new and the coach from Swim Macon asked me to join so that's where it started."

And hasn't slowed down yet. The Mount de Sales swimmer says her success in the pool did not come easy and hasn't been just from individual effort.

"She's a good teammate", says her coach Lee Stockslager. "We have a real close bunch on this team. We have 5 girls who are exceptionally good and have all bonded together. We call them the Fab 5."

Weiss explains, "The Fab 5 I love them to death. They really help push me in practice. It's Madison Cosader, Kike Afolabi-Brown, Dana Stockslager, Nicki Johnston and myself. We really help each other in practice and really push each other to be better at what we do."

On land Jessika has earned herself a 3.8 GPA which partnered with her above par skillset helps her achieve a well rounded student athlete status.

"It helps me learn time management because I know if I have practice I have to go home and do my homework and study so I can keep up my good grades because you need both to get far in life", says Weiss.

So as the season draws near a close, Weiss hopes to leave an inspiring legacy for many Cavaliers in the future and hopefully a few more state titles before competing at Wingate University on an athletic scholarship.

"I'm really excited to be at the next level swimming", Weiss exclaims. "And after al this time since I was 9 years old is well worth going another 4 years, and my time paid off."

The GISA State Swim meet is Saturday at Georgia Tech. Jessika will defend the 200 individual medley, 100m breast stroke and Medley Relay team which she along with her teammates have won 2 years running.
