Athlete of the Week: Jeremy Fleury

7:28 PM, Dec. 20, 2012 EST

Jeremy Fleury is a wrestler for Warner Robins High School and during conditioning days, the junior is mildly intense, but on the mat, Jeremy is the exact opposite.

Coach David Hodge says, "Jeremy is a hard worker. He does everything he needs to do to push himself to get better everyday. He's learning a lot. He's learning a lot of new moves this year. He's got to learn to settle down once he's out there to get under control, but he's one of the best guys that we got I wish we had a whole lot more like him."

Jeremy wrestles for the Demons in the lowest weight class at 106, but Coach Hodge says, pound-for-pound, he is likely one of the strongest students in the school, and Jeremy is not afraid to jump up a class to challenge and strategize.

"What goes through the mind most of the time, I just act on the premise that if I see that I can do it, but when it switches for periods, that's when I really map it out," says Fleury.

"He's going to give you all that he's got. He pushes himself. He sometimes gets into situations that I've never seen before and he just rolls out of it and finds a way to win," Hodge says.

Off the mat, Jeremy tackles his studies with the same passion. He carries a 91 grade average and he says anything less is not an option.

"It's really important to me and my family because my parents want me to get a good education and maybe get a scholarship or whatnot for school so I can do well in life," says Fleury.

Hodge says, "He works hard and leading an example especially for the younger kids, since we don't have any seniors. As a junior, he has really stepped up and fulfilled the role."

At 21 wins and 3 losses on the season thus far, Jeremy looks to keep improving and make it to state competition. He says it's his goal and he won't be happy unless he can scratch it off his list.

Fleury says, "I remember more the wins than the losses, but sometimes when I talk about my record, I think about the losses and and how I could have improved on them."

A leader and a captain, his coach calls him a warrior.
