The Section 1 Hudson Valley girls basketball team used a second half surge to overcome a seven-point deficit to defeat Rochester 94-87 in the opening round of the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival at Johnson City on Friday night.
Hamilton's Maia Hood led Hudson Valley with 28 points and Ossining's Saniya Chong added 24 points.
"They were a very big, physical team," Hudson Valley coach Dan Ricci said. "In the first half we weren't shooting well and we broke down. Defensively, we got better in the second half and our intensity level picked up."
Irvington's Brittni Lai had 13 points and Tappan Zee's Kristen McLaughlin came off the bench to hit two big 3-pointers.
Hudson Valley will face Suffolk today at 11:30 a.m. and Buffalo at 2:30 p.m.
Boys: Briarcliff's Brian Daniels had 17 points and five rebounds to lead Hudson Valley to a 76-52 win over Rochester in the opening round of the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival at Johnson City.
Pearl River's Kevin Degnan added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Eastchester's Jack Daly had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Hudson Valley will play Suffolk at 1 p.m. and Buffalo at 3:45 p.m. today.
