Mid-Michigan football preview: Perry Ramblers

1:00 AM, Aug. 28, 2013 EDT

Perry quarterback Dakota Hart (7) hands off to Kenny Polhemus (24) behind blockers that included Cody Proudfoot (50) and Braden Finch (23).

HOME COOKING: Perry will play six of its nine games at home. Having the extra support from the crowd will be necessary, as the team plays an extremely tough schedule. Four teams from the conference made the postseason last year, and it will take a lot for the Ramblers to finish near the top of the league this year. The team's record after its first five games (all of which are at home) should determine if the postseason is a possibility.

BATTLE TESTED: The Ramblers have 14 starters back from 2012. It's a balanced group, too, as they will have seven returnees on each side of the ball. A terrific senior class gives coach Rob Porritt his best team in his three seasons at Perry. Having so many players back should help the team build on its respectable 4-5 record from last season.

IN THE TRENCHES: The team's strength will be along the offensive and defensive lines. The duo of Alex and Cody Proudfoot will lock down the offensive guard and defensive tackle positions. Meanwhile, returning tackle Jebidiah Spencer might have been the team's best offensive lineman by the end of the 2012 season. With those three on the line, Perry should have time to pass and to find room for the running game.

HART AND SOUL: No player is more important to Perry's success than senior Dakota Hart. The quarterback threw for 1,000 yards and rushed for 315 in 2012. This season he'll also be playing outside linebacker on defense, where he projects as the team's best player on that side of the ball. He's the guy to keep an eye on to make big plays for the Ramblers.
