Week 6 of high school football kicks off on Thursday night with a pair of games.
Hardin Valley hosts Powell in a District 3-AAA match-up. The Panthers (5-1, 3-1) have looked strong once again in 2012 with their lone loss coming at Oak Ridge.
Hardin Valley (3-2, 2-1) is hoping to strengthen its playoff hopes after a tough district loss to Central last week.
Alcoa hosts district rival Kingston on Thursday night as well. The Tornadoes hammered two-time defending state champion Greeneville 42-0 last week. Alcoa's defense held the Greene Devils to just 65 yards of offense.
Kingston was handed its first loss of the season by Lenoir City last week.
Our USA Today High School Sports Game of the Week on Friday night features undefeated teams Maryville and Bearden. The Rebels beat Bearden twice last year (once in the playoffs) by a combined score of 75-6, but this is a much better, more experienced Bulldogs squad.
Bearden's defense has allowed an average of just eight points per game. Although it will be hard to stop a Maryville offense whose lowest output was 38 points against a talented Oak Ridge team last week.
Morristown West and Morristown East will battle in their annual rivalry game at Burke-Toney Stadium.
While the Hurricanes are winless at 0-5, you can never count anybody out in a heated rivalry. West has lost two in a row after opening the season with three wins.
The last two regular season meetings between the Trojans and 'Canes were decided by just two points. West eliminated East in the second round of the playoffs last year, 38-23.
West leads the all-time series 27-15. East last prevailed in 2008.
Another game to watch is Gibbs at Fulton in District 3-AA. Both schools feature dynamic rushing attacks, although their styles differ.
Gibbs runs an Air Force style Flexbone triple option. Quarterback Jay Cade rushed for 330 yards last week against CAK.
Fulton uses I-formation, shotgun and wildcat runs, spreading out the touches among several dynamic playmakers. Xavier Hawkins and Darryl Rollins are threats to score anytime they touch the ball. The duo combined for six touchdowns last week including punt and kick return scores.
Here are the remaining undefeated teams in the viewing area and their Week 6 opponents: Bearden (vs. Maryville), CAK (at Scott), Coalfield (at Wartburg), Greenback (at Grace), Maryville (at Bearden), and South-Doyle (at Cherokee).
