Local coach with Penn State ties reacts to sanctions

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Joey Wiles has been very successful in his 16 seasons as the head football coach at St. Augustine High School.  Under his leadership, the Yellow Jackets were the state runner-up in 2001 and state champs in 2005.

Wiles is entering his 31st season as a high school football coach and many of the principles and philosophies that he employs as a coach come from the late Joe Paterno.

Wiles was born in Pennsylvania and he's a life-long Penn State fan.  He has worked at many football camps in Happy Valley over the years and he's attended lots of Nittany Lions practices.  Joe Paterno allowed Wiles access to these practices which were usually closed.  He also allowed Wiles to bring some of his assistant coaches to the practices so they could all learn some of the strategies employed by the Penn State coaches.

During the time he spent around the Penn State football program, Wiles crossed paths with all of the team's coaches including Jerry Sandusky.  Needless to say, all of the news that has come out since last fall about the scandal has been tough to hear for Wiles.
