The Bishop Chatard basketball team knew Guerin Catholic would feed Aaron Brennan, but the Trojans were powerless to stop him.
Brennan, a 6-6 junior, scored 26 points to lead host Guerin past Chatard 40-35 Friday night. It was part of a doubleheader that saw the Chatard girls score a 61-56 victory over Guerin.
In the boys game, Brennan made 11-of-15 shots and all three of his 3-point tries.
"He hit a couple of shots tonight that we couldn't have defended better against," Chatard coach Travis Daugherty said.
Cris Burrough had eight points and six rebounds, and Whit Rapp had eight assists for Guerin (10-3), No. 10 in Class 3A.
Stan Jackson led Chatard (4-6) with 12 points. Joe Fagan, Chatard's leading scorer, has been out since Dec. 22 with a dislocated left shoulder. Daugherty expects him to return soon.
Brennan scored his team's first 10 points to give the Golden Eagles a 10-5 lead before the Trojans closed to 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.
After Brennan picked up his second foul with 3:21 left in the first half, Chatard took the lead. But Brennan returned for the final 12.7 seconds of the half, and he hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to give Guerin a 20-18 lead.
"When we had the ball, we were going to run a play for him," Guerin coach Pete Smith said. "He hit a 3 to put us up by two. That was big."
Chatard found its offense early in the second half, as back-to-back 3-pointers by Stephen Schueth and Patrick Huffine and a layup by Jackson off a turnover gave Chatard a four-point edge.
But the Golden Eagles responded, thanks to a Burrough basket in close and a 3-pointer. When Brennan hit a bank shot at the end of the third period, Guerin had a 33-30 lead.
The Golden Eagles then went into a four-corners offense and worked the clock for 4 minutes before turning the ball over. But a missed Chatard 3-pointer and a Trojans turnover were countered by a Matt Labus basket and Brennan dunk to make it 37-30 and put the game out of reach with 48 seconds left.
"It was a big momentum shift," Brennan said. "We just did what we do in practice and played hard."
Chatard felt like it let one get away.
"They're a team that demands that you play with some discipline. I thought our guys did a good job of that for the most part, we just came up a few plays short," Daugherty said.
Hannah Gardner had 14 points and nine assists, Anna Logan had 12 points and 18 rebounds and Marissa Collier added 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Chatard (8-5) to the victory.
C.C. Cotter scored 14 of her 15 points in the second half to pace Guerin (10-5).
Chatard led 30-16 at halftime as Guerin committed 22 turnovers before the break.
But the Golden Eagles chipped away throughout the third quarter, and when Sarah Yount made a 3-pointer late in the period, it cut the lead to 40-39.
Chatard led by three going into the final quarter. Two straight Collier baskets and a Grace Dury 3-point play pushed the Trojans' advantage to 53-44 with a little more than five minutes to play.
