Prep girls swimming: Kiel pair ready for State appearance

Brooke Iserloth

One is a first timer. The other a veteran.

The WIAA Division 2 State Girls Swimming Meet will be held today at the UW Natatorium in Madison with a pair of Kiel swimmers being the only Manitowoc Country representatives in attendance.

Junior Brooke Iserloth will make her State debut as she competes in the diving portion of the meet while senior Elizabeth Buchholz will be making her fourth State appearance. Buclholz participates in the 200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle and has medaled in the 500 the past three years at State.

"(Medaling) is what the plan is. That's definitely the goal," Kiel swimming coach Sandy Buchholz said of Elizabeth. "(We've been telling Elizabeth to) just swim her best, her fastest. She feels good. I think she will do alright and she should do well."

Elizabeth Buchholz's qualifying time of 5:11.53 was the third fastest behind Shorewood senior Ellen Stello (5:05.08) and McFarland freshman Rina Krupsky (5:07.23). In the 200, Buchholz's time of 1:58.06 is the seventh fastest time out of the 16 qualifiers in the event.

Buchholz has gradually been recovering this season from having her appendix taken out in April. Chronic appendicitis hampered Buchholz last year, including at State, but this year she heads into the meet with a clean slate of health.

"(Elizabeth) has gradually been coming back from (having her appendix removed) and is doing well so we are not expecting any (health) troubles this year (at State)," Sandy Buchholz said. "We are all thankful for that."

For Iserloth, her qualifying performance of 282.55 was good for 12th out of the 16 qualifiers. Heading into the season her goal was to make it to State. Now that she has made it, Kiel diving coach Darryll Matthies -- also a first-time State attendee -- said the goal Iserloth and he have set for her is to maintain or better that position as she will be doing the same dive as she did at last week's sectional.

"Pretty much I have been telling (Iserloth) to keep doing what she is doing," Matthies said. "I am telling her to try and stay relaxed and enjoy it."
