Finishing second in state just fine for Estero baseball coach

No, no, no, not today. It had been the signature chant as well as rallying cry of a gritty, gutty, chatty Estero High baseball team. The Wildcats heartbreaking loss in Class 5A state championship also meant a negative answer to the question: Would a Lee County public high school win its first state title? Not today.

Chanting Wildcats just found ways to win ballgames

Considering this was Estero's first state appearance, considering that it was 8-7 at one point this season, that even the most ardent Wildcats' fans would have a hard time ranking this team among coach Frank Turco's five best, it has been quite an achievement to be Class 5A runners-up.

Southwest Florida Christian edges Gateway on late TD

Trailing 3-0 entering the fourth quarter, Southwest Florida Christian seniors informed coach Mark Ackerman they were staying in to finish the job. The Knights continued to play solid defense and rising junior Terrance De Avila scored from two yards out early in the fourth to secure a 7-3 victory over Gateway Charter in the spring football game at Bishop Verot on Friday.

Giant killers Estero, Ponte Vedra meet in Class 5A Florida baseball final

Estero upset nationally-ranked American Heritage in the Class 5A regional final to advance to the state semifinals. Ponte Vedra did the same Wednesday with a 3-1 defeat of USA Today Super 25 No. 3 Tampa Jesuit (27-3) 2-1 in the Class 5A state semifinals.
