When Winnebago Lutheran senior Maustin Otterstatter was trying to decide what university to attend, he made a chart to determine which school had what he was looking for.

Washburn University, a school in Topeka, Kan. with an NCAA Division II athletic program, had the most check marks and earned Otterstatter's commitment. Otterstatter signed his National Letter of Intent on Tuesday with expectations of pitching for Washburn in the spring of 2014.

"They have really nice facilities there," Otterstatter said. "Their coach has been there for over 30 years and he knows what he's doing.

"The guys who play baseball there have a very high acceptance rate into their jobs after college. To me they still push academics."

Otterstatter said he hopes to major in kinesiology.

Otterstatter started for WLA in the WIAA Division 3 state tournament as a sophomore, and as a junior in 2012, he pitched 71 2/3 innings, compiled a 10-2 record and struck out 93 batters.

This fall he played for a club team in Kansas and it paid off with increased recruiting exposure, including from the likes of Washburn. For the Ichabods and head coach Steve Anson, who has 33 years at the school, the Fond du Lac native expects to have an immediate role.

"I'm going to be pitching. I'm going to be throwing as a freshman, don't know my role yet," Otterstatter said. "But I know [Anson] and the other coaches think I will have a pivotal role and be a force in the rotation for years to come."
