The Fond du Lac boys hockey team surrendered its lead early in the third period of Saturday's season opener against Madison Edgewood. Then the Cardinals took a penalty. Instead of folding, Fondy scored four unanswered goals to win the nonconference game 5-1.
Michael Wilson scored in the first period, but a short-handed Jack Nejedlo goal 3:55 into the third turned the tide.
Aaron Krueger, Ty Rebedew (also short-handed) and Bailey Koenigs finished the scoring.
"I thought we had two ways to go at that point," Fondy coach Ryan Sarazin said of Edgewood's goal. "We could get in a shell and worry about being scored on or we can have a good response.
"A couple guys up front who might not have helped us pull away before, said 'let's get the first win of the season.'"
