Boys basketball: Campbellsport survives Orioles' challenge

12:00 AM, Nov. 20, 2012 EST

The Campbellsport High School boys basketball team survived an ugly third quarter to beat North Fond du Lac in a nonconference game Tuesday night 54-37.

The Cougars took a 13-point lead to halftime, only for most of it to disappear in a third quarter, in which they were outscored 14-2.

Campbellsport needed a spark and they got it 30 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Trenton Buerger came up with a big offensive rebound and kicked it out to sophomore Jordan Dreikosen who buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key. After a stop on the defensive end, Isiah Daniels got the ball under the basket and made it 40-34 and the game was never closer than six after that.

"Those were great shots," Campbellsport coach Kyle Twohig said. "Jordan's going to make some big shots. He's a nice player; definitely not afraid to shoot."

And Twohig said he could sense his team gaining confidence and momentum after that spurt.

"Our energy picked up," he said. "It looked like our kids were nervous in the third quarter when things weren't going well, but once we started scoring everything kind of came together."

Allen Bong led Campbellsport (1-1) with 14 points, and Dreikosen and Daniels added 13 apiece. Daniels was especially difficult for the Orioles to handle. The wide-bodied, 6-foot-5 junior with a flat top grabbed 12 rebounds and swatted four shots from North Fondy, which has only one player taller than 6-1.

With Daniels in the paint, the Orioles relied on their perimeter game. Jacob Klapa scored 12 points to pace North Fondy. But in the third quarter it was a couple of big shots from Ben Mand that turned the tide.

Down by seven, Mand took a pass from Klapa on the left wing and nailed a 3-pointer. The next time down Mand went left and pulled up for a long 2. At that point, things were going well, but North Fondy coach Kris Saiberlich said his team had to use too much energy to make the game close.

"The problem with getting down into a hole is we expended so much energy in the third quarter to get back into the game," Saiberlich said. "You could tell we were a little bit gassed in the fourth quarter."

He said that his team's play in the third quarter was a highlight in the Orioles' season opener, but that he worried about his team's individualism with the ball.
