EAST LANSING -- George Ward had a request of the Son of Swami for today's Class A state championship game.
"Keep picking Romulus," Ward asked. "Pick them by 15."
Is that all? SOS was thinking more like 30.
"What kind of water you drinking?'' Ward asked the All-Knowing One. "You haven't changed a bit.''
See, SOS and Ward go back all the way to 1987 when Ward was a junior on the Detroit Cooley team that lost to Detroit Southwestern in the Public School League championship game by 30 points and then came back a month later and shocked Southwestern -- not to mention the western hemisphere -- to win the state title.
As much as SOS would like to report that Ward was the student manager in 1987, he was an integral part of that Cooley team as well as the '88 squad that also won.
And a Southeastern victory today might be as big an upset as Ward was a part of a mere 26 years ago. To see if SOS will indeed pick Southeastern, read on.
Romulus (26-1) vs. Detroit Southeastern (21-5), noon. The Eagles were SOS's No. 1 team at the beginning of the season and with Elbert Clark Matthews scoring like he is, it won't make any difference that Coach Ward learned the game from Ben Kelso. Romulans 54, Jungle Ears 49.
Country Day (24-3) vs. Detroit Community (18-9), 6:30 p.m. Country Day is No. 1 and was incredibly impressive in the semifinals. Community's Byron Zeigler will be difficult to stop, but Community has to get him the ball. But having SOS's main man Earl Moore on Community's bench has to help. Country Dog 67, Community College 60.
Flint Beecher (26-1) vs. Laingsburg (24-2), 4:30 p.m. Laingsburg has a talented team that finds ways to win, which is why the Wolfpack were in SOS's first rankings. But Beecher has this kid named Monte Morris and he finds ways not to lose, which is why he is Mr. Basketball. Beechnut 64, Lamesburg 58.
Wyoming Tri-unity Christian (25-2) vs. Southfield Christian (22-4), 10 a.m. This is how it should be: No. 1 Tri-unity vs. No. 2 Southfield Christian. And these teams are both here because they played the two toughest Class D schedules in the state. But it was Southfield Christian that began the season No. 1. Southfield's Christians 62, Triumvirate 59.
