As Michigan prepares for its NCAA tournament game against South Dakota State tonight, the program's future is shining.
Two of its three signees in next year's class were named their state's Gatorade Player of the Year: Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy point guard Derrick Walton in Michigan and Hamilton Southeastern wing Zak Irvin in Indiana.
The award's criteria is "based on athletic production and impact in season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership."
Walton was the runner-up to Flint Beecher's Monte Morris for the state's Mr. Basketball award earlier this week.
