Metro & state: Ithaca QB Travis Smith named Gatorade player of the year

The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, announced Thursday that Travis Smith of Ithaca High its 2013-14 Gatorade Michigan football player of the year.

The 6-foot-2, 193-pound senior quarterback led the Yellow Jackets (14-0) to a fourth consecutive Division 6 state championship.

Smith passed for 3,278 yards with 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

He was 188-for-264 passing (71.2%).

College Football: Eastern Michigan senior defensive lineman Cy Maughmer was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I second team. Maughmer boasts a 3.98 GPA in secondary education.

Volleyball: Ferris State's women's team advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional as the Bulldogs topped Lewis (Ill.), 3-1, in the quarterfinals in Allendale. Ferris is the No. 2 seed, and Lewis was No. 7.
