1:00 AM, Aug. 19, 2012 EDT

Mick McCabe picks the state's top-25 teams. Here are Nos. 21-25 (come back Monday for Nos. 16-20); all players are seniors unless noted:

21) Macomb Dakota

Top players: OT/DE Christan Gore, 6-3, 245; junior S David Basirico, 6-1, 180; C Mitch Gralewski, 6-3, 250; junior DT Scott Masyra, 6-1, 265; junior WR-RB Matt Crossley, 6-1, 185; LB junior Niko Savich, 6-0, 210, 2014; junior OT Brandon Lozon, 6-2, 270.

All-time state playoff record: 26-10.

Coach: Mike Giannone 120-42, 15th season at Dakota.

Biggest game: Sept. 21 vs. Utica Eisenhower, 7 p.m.

Overview: A dominating defense should make the Cougars contenders in the rugged MAC Red. OT/DE Christan Gore is a standout on both lines, and junior safety David Basirico adds stability to a reliable secondary.

22) Walled Lake Western

Top players: S/RB Josh Jones, 6-2, 210; junior QB/DB/K Kyle Bambard, 5-9, 170; LB Melis Johnson, 5-9, 180; junior OT Alex Joss, 6-4, 270; LB Zach Prokes, 5-9, 185; CB/RB Jake Neracher, 5-11, 170; junior RB Malik Green, 6-0, 180.

All-time state playoff record: 20-12.

Coach: Mike Zdebski 101-47, 15th season at Western.

Biggest game: Oct. 5 at Walled Lake Central, 7 p.m.

Overview: S/RB Josh Jones (Illinois) is a difference maker on both sides of the ball. QB/DB Kyle Bambard is an effective runner and passer, but he might be most dangerous as a kicker, where he booted nine field goals last season.

23) Mt. Pleasant

Top players: Junior TB Michael Tweh, 5-11, 200; S/QB Cory Williams, 6-1, 185; LB/WR Antonio Povinelli, 5-11, 190; OG/LB Matt Keller, 6-0, 210; junior OT Erik Belco, 5-11, 260; junior DB/WR Evan Huber, 5-7, 155; OT Jaime Hoyt, 5-9, 290.

All-time state playoff record: 15-12.

Coach: Jason McIntyre 60-12, seventh season at Mt. Pleasant.

Biggest game: Sept. 21 at Midland, 7 p.m.

Overview: The Division 3 runner-up returns only three starters defensively, but the overall athletic ability is improved. Look for another huge year from junior RB Michael Tweh, who ran for 1,912 yards and 25 TDs as a sophomore.

24) Holt

Top players: Junior TB Ty Glover, 5-8, 180; LB Charles Waits, 6-0, 200; LB Jalen Scott, 6-1, 190; LB Chris Morgan, 6-3, 205; DB Trevor Stone, 5-10, 170; junior DB Austin Kent, 5-11, 180.

All-time state playoff record: 15-13.

Coach: Al Slamer 156-88; 28-15, fifth season at Holt.

Biggest game: Oct. 19 at Grand Ledge, 7 p.m.

Overview: The Rams were young last season and showed great promise in coming from behind in several games. Junior TB Ty Glover is going to be the workhorse in the backfield, carrying the ball more than 30 times a game. This could be an exceptional defense with key veterans in the line, at linebacker and in the secondary.

25) Detroit East Village Prep

Top players: TE/DE Khalid Hill, 6-3, 240; DB/RB Desmond King, 5-11, 180; DE Leon Johnson, 6-0, 247; OT/DT Jalen Dandridge, 6-3, 285; C Antoine Johnson-Clark, 6-3, 315; LB Equan Moore, 5-10.

All-time state playoff record: 0-0.

Coach: Rod Oden 60-20, 1st season at East Village.

Biggest game: Aug. 31 at Detroit King, 7 p.m.

Overview: This is the combination of Crockett and Finney, with almost all of the players coming from Crockett. There is a massive offensive line that will allow East Village to dominate the ground game. The defense's front seven will be strong.
