WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- West Springfield's Jordan Trunfio, number 58, is battling brain cancer. And while his health may keep him off the line of scrimmage during regulation, it doesn't keep Trunfio out of the action. Every game this season, the senior center has stepped out on to the field for the coin toss with his teammates.
This Friday, West Springfield bumped its record to 3-0 with a 33-14 victory against the Lee Lancers.
The Spartans defense forced a Lee three-and-out to start the game and never looked back. West Springfield picked off Lee quarterback John Rodgers four times and tackled running back Michael Jolly in the back of the end zone for a safety in the second quarter.
Anther reason the Spartans are emerging as a legitimate region title contender in Northern Virginia is running back Jonathan Dunn. The junior can be impossible to tackle at times and is also explosive in the open field.
West Springfield head coach J.T. Biddison, now in his fourth season, thinks this win can be a springboard victory for his program, although he prefers the Spartans fly under the radar.
"Three games is three games," said the Biddison. "It's a great night and we're going to celebrate. The kids played great and they have everything to be happy for ... but Monday, it's back to work."
