DAMASCUS, Md. (WUSA) -- Damascus secured the Montgomery 3A/2A title on Friday night with a 58-40 victory over Poolesville.

It's the second time this winter that the Hornets have topped the Falcons, but as Damascus approaches the end of its regular season, the team isn't giving itself much time to focus on Friday's win.

"Our main goal, first off, was the number one seed and we need to win two more games to get that," said head coach Steve Pisarski.

Next: make it through regionals one game at a time and achieve what's slipped away from Damascus for years, states.

"We've been very close. We've been in the regional final too many times and lost ... Last year was a tough one ... they remember that, so hopefully that will help carry us through," said Pisarski.

This season, the Hornets have adjusted their style of play, relying less on free throws and developing their ability to slow down the ball at half court and make strategic cuts to the basket. Pisarski credits his players' steady rhythm on the court to experience, as his squad is comprised completely of juniors and seniors.

"We're a pretty mature team ... they usually stay within those limits of their own personal game and if everybody does that, those limits are high enough for our team, overall, to be pretty good," said Pisarski.

Damascus' Kelli Prange finished the game with 20 points on Friday, but like Pisarski, she's moving forward quickly.

"Everybody had an amazing game tonight ... we'll go so far in the playoffs ... we just need to have everybody show up each game," said the 5-foot-7 junior.

The Hornets, now 18-2, will continue their mission Monday with a home game against Blake.
