USC Finds Offensive Line, Defensive Help on Signing Day

3:21 PM, Feb. 06, 2013 EST

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The South Carolina Gamecocks used National Signing Day to find strength on their offensive line and extra help on defense.

By the end of Wednesday, 21 players had faxed in a National Letter of Intent to the school.

The letter of intent makes a recruit's selection final.

"Our coaches did an excellent job all recruiting season," USC Head Coach Steve Spurrier said. "We missed a few guys here and there, but overall we're in pretty good shape."

There was little drama on the day itself, as all players who had verbally committed to the school went ahead and made their pledges official. A few recruits, most notably quarterback Connor Mitch of Raleigh, NC, were already on campus at USC, having enrolled at the start of this semester.

According to recruiting website Rivals.com, some of the school's highest rated recruits came on the offensive line and at the linebacker position. D.J. Park of Dillon and Na'Ty Rogers of Pomfret, Maryland, both four-star offensive linemen, should help the Gamecocks with depth right away. In all, the team signed five offensive linemen.

Skai Moore of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Larenz Bryant of Charlotte are both expected to be added right away to the linebacker corps.

Rivals ranks USC's recruiting class as the 16th best in the nation, but Spurrier said he doesn't put a lot of stock in those rankings.

"You're not going to see me do a lot of rah-rahing on Signing Day," he said. "We'd rather make our noise here on Williams-Brice on gameday."

Worth noting about South Carolina's crop of players this year is, well, the lack of South Carolina players. Just four members of the 2013 class hail from the Palmetto State. Georgia provided the home turf of the largest amount of players (six), while North Carolina and Florida are tied for second with four.

"They're a good bunch of solid guys," Spurrier said. "They're a great group."
