High School Sports Rewind: Oct. 14 - Oct. 20

Relive some of the biggest happenings from the past week in Northeast Ohio prep sports.

Monday

Medina senior girls basketball player Sarah Kinch recently orally committed to attend Northern Kentucky in fall 2013 and to join the school's Division I women's hoops program.

The Oberlin volleyball team's attempt at a postseason tournament run was halted before it could begin by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. The governing body ruled the team ineligible to participate in postseason play because the OHSAA has no proof that the team's head coach completed the mandated rules training that is required of all head coaches each athletic season.

Tuesday

St. Peter Chanel recently named 2003 St. Edward grad Timothy Scarl its next head wrestling coach.

Akron Firestone senior swimmer Katie Miller recently orally committed to attend the University of Notre Dame in fall 2013 and to join the Fighting Irish's Division I swim team, according to Falcons coach Cindy Virdo.

Lexington High School senior Sami Stoner and her guide dog Chloe were featured during the Oct. 16 episode of ESPN's documentary show, E: 60.

Wednesday

Standout St. Edward senior wrestler Domenic Abounader, who has already won two Division I state titles, recently orally committed to attend the University of Michigan in fall 2013 and to join the school's wrestling program.

Thursday

Copley senior tailback Aregeros Turner recently orally committed to attend the University of Cincinnati in fall 2013 and to join the Bearcats' football team.

President of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane recently announced that the school's new gym, which is currently under construction, will be named the Eugene T. Baker Gymnasium.

Massillon Washington standout senior wide receiver Gareon Conley was recently selected to participate in the 2013 Under Amour All-America High School Football Game on Jan. 5 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Conley was presented his jersey for the game during a ceremony at Washington High School on Thursday.   

Saturday

The Medina boys golf team placed fifth at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I state tournament on Saturday while Walsh Jesuit finished sixth, Aurora finished eighth and St. Edward finished ninth. Individually, Stow-Munroe Falls junior Chase Johnson placed second, Uniontown Lake senior Jake McBride placed third, Stow-Munroe Falls junior Ian Holt tied for sixth place and Medina sophomore Spencer Koch and Aurora senior Andrew Hinton tied for seventh place.

The Medina Highland girls golf team placed second at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I state tournament on Saturday while Massillon Jackson placed third, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin placed sixth, Magnificat placed seventh and North Canton Hoover placed eighth. Individually, Medina Highland senior Jessica Porvasnik placed first, Avon Lake sophomore Nikolette Schroeder placed second, North Canton Hoover senior MacKenzie DiPietro placed third and Kent Roosevelt sophomore Kasey Nielsen placed sixth.

Westlake senior Lauren Golick was crowned the Division I state tennis tournament singles champion on Saturday.
