High School Sports Rewind: Dec. 10-Dec. 15

Relive some of the biggest happenings from the past week in Northeast Ohio prep sports.

-- At its year-end meeting during the state finals in Stark County, the directors of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association voted to split the Ohio North-South Classic into two separate all-star games. One will feature players and coaches from Divisions I-III while the other will feature players and coaches from Divisions IV-VI. Both contests will be held at Dayton's Welcome Stadium on April 27.

-- Massillon Perry recently hired Keith Wakefield as its next head football coach. Wakefield previously guided the program from 1982-2003 and posted a 157-72 record.

-- Labrae recently hired John Armeni as its next head football coach.

-- Kirtland standout senior two-way player Damon Washington recently orally committed to attend Miami University in fall 2013 and to accept an athletic scholarship to join the RedHawks' Mid-American Conference football team.

-- Akron Firestone swimmer Mark Belanger recently signed a binding national letter of intent with Ohio State University, officially agreeing to attend OSU in fall 2013 and to join the Buckeyes' swim team on scholarship.

-- North Canton Hoover swimmer Robert Tolson recently signed a binding national letter of intent with Cleveland State University, officially agreeing to attend CSU in fall 2013 and to join the Vikings' swim team.

-- Ryan Williams recently resigned as Beachwood's head football coach, citing a desire to pursue other opportunities.

-- Jerami Hodgkinson recently resigned as Coventry's head football coach, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.   

-- Tricia Poszgai recently resigned as Wickliffe's head softball coach.

-- Sandy Valley football and wrestling coach John Groff recently announced his plan to retire from teaching and coaching at the end of the school year.

-- The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland announced on Friday that it will close St. Peter Chanel High School following the 2012-13 school year.

-- Walsh Jesuit senior swimmer Danielle Margheret recently orally committed to attend the University of Notre Dame in fall 2013 and to accept an athletic scholarship to join the Fighting Irish's swim team.

-- Orrville senior girls basketball player Hannah Plybon broke the school's all-time career scoring record in the Red Riders' 62-32 win at Lexington on Dec. 13. Her 25-point performance brought her career total to 1,483 points.

-- Cortland Lakeview junior girls basketball player Allie Pavlik broke the school record for points in a girls hoops game with her 47-point performance against Campbell Memorial on Dec. 13.   

-- Akron Firestone senior swimmers Katie Miller and Mark Belanger each won two events apiece at the ninth annual Canton City Schools Christmas Invitational on Saturday. Belanger set meet records in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Miller set a meet record in the 100 butterfly.     

-- Gilmour Academy junior Macie McNichols finished first in the 100-yard freestyle event at the 38th Viking Invitational swim meet on Saturday by besting the meet record - set by McNichols in 2011 - by finishing in 51.06 seconds. Massillon Jackson's Chase Kinney set school and meet records in the 50-yard freestyle at the same event by finishing in 23.24 seconds.
