Hoover's Lilley named Gatorade Ohio Softball Player of the Year

7:58 PM, Jun. 07, 2013 EDT

North Canton Hoover junior shortstop Jenna Lilley received word that she had been selected as the 2013 Gatorade Ohio Softball Player of the Year while waiting out the rain that forced the Vikings' Division I state semifinal contest against Mentor in Akron to be delayed for several hours.

Despite all the downtime, the first-team all-state selection didn't share the news with her teammates  until after they had recorded a 15-3 win to advance to today's state title game against Elyria.

If the Vikings hoist the championship trophy this afternoon, it will mark Lilley's third state title in as many years.

Hoover head coach Jerry Goodpasture said Lilley is certainly athletically gifted, but what  truly sets her apart from the competition is her work ethic.

"It doesn't come easy; Jenna works for what she gets," Goodpasture said, "She is probably one of the hardest workers in the state."

Lilley boasts a batting average over .700 and currently holds the school's RBI record. Showing patience at the plate, she has also been walked 40 times.

Off the field, Lilley maintains a 3.91 cumulative GPA.

Arguably the top prospect in her recruiting class, Lilley has already verbally committed to attend the University of Oregon and play for the Ducks.
