WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y.-In girls Section 6 quarterfinal Federation hockey action Monday Williamsville beat West Seneca 4-1.
Williamsville scored twice in the first period to take control of the game. Leah Czerwinski # 15 started the scoring with Cassandra Hopkins and Emily Martin helping out. Rachel Grampp got the first of her two goals on the night in the first period to give Williamsville a 2-0 lead after the first period. Hopkins also assisted on the second goal.
West Seneca had a great chance to get back into the game early in the second period when they were awarded a penalty shot and a power play after it. For West Seneca # 12 Erin Gehen the leading scorer in the Federation took the penalty shot but was stopped by Williamsville goalie # 33 Therea Meosky. Meosky finished the night with 22 saves.
The other goal scorer for Williamsville was # 12 Sara Skolnick. For West Seneca # 3 Molly Sikorski scored the only goal with an assist from Gehen.
Williamsville coach Rick Hopkins told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "it was a solid team effort. That team has given us trouble. We needed a good start and we got that with the two first period goals and that second goal by Rachel was the game winner. Theresa stood up in goal not only did she stop the penalty shot but she made a huge save to keep the score 3-1 just before Rachel scored her second goal of the game. "
Williamsville will face Kenmore Wednesday night at the Northtown Center. Hopkins said "Its exciting to face Kenmore again. They beat us in double overtime a week ago so it will be nice to play them again."
Williamsville outshot West Seneca 32-23. For West Seneca # 18 Abby Mutton had a strong game in goal despite allowing four goals.
