TONAWANDA, N.Y.-In a rematch of last year's Monsignor Martin championship game Saturday afternoon at St. Joe's the Marauders beat St. Francis 28-21.
The Marauders led 20-7 after the first quarter and it appeared it was going to be an old fashioned shootout. Instead the scoring was completed at halftime.
St. Joe's head coach Dennis Gilbert made a change at quarterback. Junior Nigel Davis learned Monday he'd be under center against the Red Raiders. Tyler Hill played tight end and that allowed him to get more snaps at defensive end.
For the time being it appears its a one game only switch but now that's something else St. Joe's opponents will have to think about that. Davis was the third stringer each of the past two seasons behind Chad Kelly.
Davis was 4 of 7 for 64 yards with one touchdown. Tyler Hill had three catches for 50 yards including an 11 yarder from Davis.
St. Joe's had 217 yards in the first quarter. They ended the game with 290 yards as St. Francis really tightened up the defense.
Senior Ilo Noble had 163 on 15 carries and three touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 39,32 and 25 yards.
Defensively the Marauders held St. Francis running back Alex Misterman to 68 yards on 26 carries. He had one yard in the second half.
Defensively St. Joe's created eight turnovers. Davis had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Jack Bargnesi had eight tackles. Frank Spina had seven tackles.
St. Joe's improves to 3-0 while St. Francis drops to 0-3.
St. Joe's plays at O'Hara next week.
