Hutch-Tech Hopes For Break Out Season

11:10 AM, Aug. 09, 2012 EDT

DEPEW, N.Y.-It hasn't been easy for the Hutchinson-Central Technical Engineers since they've made the move from Harvard Cup football to Section VI, going 0-9 in their first season and 2-7 last year. But as head coach Chris Gelsomino reminds us, "last year we only won two games, but lost four games by a combined 7 points, so we really hung in there with everybody."

This season, Gelsomino and the Engineers are looking to keep improving in the tough Section VI. On offense they return three starters on the offensive line and wide receiver Robert Graves who figures to be the best playmaker on the team. The Engineers will also be lead by a new quarterback in Lenny Dowell who coach Gelsomino is very excited about.

"Lenny has good size, good speed and a great arm. If we need him to throw the ball 60 yards he'll do that effortlessly," Gelsomino said. "We're definitely looking to throw the ball. We're looking to open it up and get it in the hands of our playmakers."

On defense Hutch Tech returns all-league defensive tackle Jamel Collins. Gelsomino says the secondary is young and has to improve, but overall he is very excited about his defense as well.

As for the team as a whole, "our core is really solid, we're just looking to gain some depth now," Gelsomino said. "We're trying to identify some backups that are going to play a lot and definitely some special teams' guys."

Gelsomino and his Engineers will look to Engineer their first victory as they play host to Iroquois on August 31st at 4 p.m.
