SUWANEE, Ga. -- The North Gwinnett girls are off to an 11-0 start this season, but Coach Bryan Sellers' team is far from satisfied. The team that went to the final four last season expects to play on the final day this time.
The North Gwinnett girls returned from a holiday trip to Naples, Florida with a tournament title and a perfect record and a number 3 ranking in the nation. When asked what has the team off to such an outstanding start Sellers says it's talent and hardwork combined with unselfish play." These girls genuinely don't care who gets the credit," says Sellers.
At the Naples Holiday Shootout, the North Gwinnett girls faced a talented field from across the country and won all four games. Maryland-bound Lexie Brown was tournament MVP. While Penn State-Bound Peyton Whitted and junior point guard Baylee Rexing landed on the all tournament team. "The team played well in the games that will prepare them for the games that count," says Sellers.
The games that count are the games in Region 7-AAAAAA. The Bulldogs have dates with Collins Hill and Mill Creek on Friday and Saturday, with a showdown against arch-rival Norcross on Wednesday of next week. It will be the first of a potential 4 meetings with the Blue Devils this season.
That 4th meeting with Norcross would almost have to come in the Final Four, where last season ended. A bitter memory for a team that went 26-4, with a 13-1 region mark. When asked if his team talks about the Final Four Sellers replies, "I hope we learned from it". "We don't want to dwell on the past." "We live in the present and prepare for the future, with a goal to win the last game." That last game would be the for the state championship.
