A third consecutive rally was not to be for the No. 3 ranked Lakeside Lady Vikings as they fell 3-0 to the No. 1 ranked Whitewater Lady Wildcats in the Class AAAAA state playoff semifinals at McIntosh on Wednesday.
Lakeside had rallied in the second round from a 2-0 deficit to Houston County and a 1-0 deficit to No. 9 ranked Greenbrier in the quarterfinals to force fifth games on the way to 3-2 wins.
Whitewater (52-3) has lost only 10 games all season with six of those losses coming in their three losses on the season. The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-16 and 25-17 before the break.
The past two rounds the break had been a turning point for the Lady Vikings, but Whitewater would not let it happen despite the Lady Vikings continued hard play. Whitewater closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the third game to advance to the state finals.
The Lady Vikings (29-7) were in the state playoff semifinals for the first time in the program's history and are just the second DeKalb team to reach the semifinals, joining the 2005 Chamblee squad led by Gatorade Player of the Year Nikki Hawkins which set a county best record of 56-8.
Lakeside, ranked No. 3 entering the semifinal match, was the only non-Area 4-AAAAA team to reach the semifinals which included No. 1 Whitewater, No.
2 McIntosh and No. 4 Starr's Mill.
Lakeside, coached by Angela Thompson, was one of five DeKalb teams to reach the state playoffs this season as Tucker (second round), Dunwoody, Chamblee and Redan also earned state tournament berths.
