Prime Prep PG Emmanuel Mudiay defends basketball

Prime Prep (Dallas) point guard Emmanuel Mudiay says basketball produces the best athletes

Emmanuel Mudiay is the 2014 No. 2 ranked player in the country according to 247Sports.  / 247 Sports

It's not that Prime Prep (Dallas) point guard Emmanuel Mudiay it being biased, he's got a "real respect" for the other sports.
"Especially soccer," said Mudiay, a junior. "I was born in Congo and that was all we knew over there."
Still, when it comes to which sport has the best athletes, Mudiay doesn't think there's any question that hoops reigns supreme.
"That's an easy one," Mudiay said. "The other sports can't compare to our sport athletically."
Don't agree?
Here are Mudiay's compelling reasons.
Q: Why is the ultimate athlete in your sport?
"I mean come on! Basketball is a global game and there's nothing like it. Just the in-game situations where you have to really display your athleticism ... You see examples of it every game. Look at the dunks and the jumping and the running. We've definitely got the ultimate athletes."
Q: For anyone who disagrees, what drill specific to your sport would you like to see them try?
"I would say any drill that involved ballhandling. Just dribbling through cones with the small spacing and maneuvering in and out takes a lot of athleticism and skill. I would love for anyone to try that."
Q: What is the second-toughest sport behind yours?
"Probably soccer. That's what I started out playing. That's tough."
Q: What's the best measure of a true athlete (strength, speed, quickness, agility, etc.)?
"I think that the most athletic players make their teammates better. So that could mean a lot of different things, but I think it's a combination of different traits for a true athlete."
Q: Who is the best athlete in your sport, past or present?
"I really think that Magic Johnson was a really underrated athlete. People don't give him enough credit for how athletic he was. I really think that he was one of the best athletes ever."
Q: What is the best example of something you did personally that shows why your sport has the ultimate athlete?
"I don't know if I can just think of one thing, because over the course of a game, as a ballplayer, you do so many things that you have to be really athletic in order to pull off. It could be a dunk, it could be sprinting back on defense, change of direction. You pick one. All I know is if you're looking for the best athlete you'll find him in basketball."
