South Dakota Girls Basketball POY: Kerri Young

THE WINNER: Kerri Young


School: Mitchell (S.D.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Guard/forward
Height: 6 feet

Athletic achievement: Young averaged 17 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game, leading the Kernels (21-4) to the Class AA state final. A three-time All-State first team selection, Young became Mitchell’s career scoring leader among both boys and girls this season, finishing with 1,760 points as a four-year varsity player.

Academic excellence: Young has maintained a 4.0 GPA and will graduate as the valedictorian of her class.

Exemplary character: A devoted parishioner in her church community and a student council representative, Young has volunteered on behalf of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and as a youth basketball and volleyball camp counselor.


“Kerri Young is the reason for so much of our success in recent years,” said Mitchell head coach Wes Morgan. “She makes the whole team better, not just with her scoring but also by getting the ball to her teammates and her commitment to defense.”

THE FUTURE: Young will attend South Dakota State.
