POY WATCH: BYU basketball commit Nick Emery a leader for No. 3 Lone Peak


The window on the Gatorade State Boys Basketball Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our USA TODAY team that administers the program’s selection process.

Nick Emery
Senior guard, Lone Peak (Highland, Utah)

How he’s played himself into the State POY conversation: Emery is ranked as the nation’s No. 61 recruit in the Class of 2013 by ESPN. The 6-foot-2 guard is the leading scorer for a team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation earlier this season. During his sophomore season, Emery was named Gatorade Utah Boys Basketball Player of the Year and was the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune Class 5A MVP in 2011.

How he’s played himself into the State POY conversation: The 6-foot-3 guard led the state in scoring as a junior and is leading Class 4A again this season. Van Dyke was the Salt Lake Tribune Class 4A Player of the Year in 2012.
