POY WATCH: Colorado girls basketball star Diani Akigbogun outscores her competition


The window on the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our USA TODAY team that administers the program’s selection process.

Diani Akigbogun
Junior forward, Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Akigbodun is the top rebounder and second-leading scorer for Regis Jesuit, which is tied with crosstown rival Grandview (Aurora, Colo.) for the best record in Class 5A competition. She recorded a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) in a 59-53 win to hand Grandview its only loss of the season to date on Jan. 12. During her sophomore season, Akigbodun averaged 11.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Adaeze Obinnah
Senior forward, Grandview (Aurora, Colo.)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Obinnah ranks first on her team in rebounding and blocked shots and is Grandview’s second-leading scorer. She netted a season-high 21 points in a 68-25 win over Mullen (Denver, Colo.) on Jan. 11.
