From many, there will be one. And while there’s still no guarantee contending athletes will win their own state at this point in the season, a number of elite performers are making a case for Gatorade National Football Player of the Year consideration. Here’s the scoop on the latest top candidate.

Shuler Bentley
Senior quarterback, Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.)

Greatness Present: The reigning Gatorade South Carolina Football Player of the Year picked up right where he left off last season, when he tossed 59 TD passes and led Byrnes to the Class 4A-I semifinals.

Through six games, Bentley has already connected on 32 touchdown passes against just five interceptions for the Rebels (5-1), including a remarkable nine-TD effort in an 82-49 win over Woodruff last month.

Bentley has completed 70 percent of his attempts (235-363) for 3,495 passing yards, averaging 377 yards per game and 11.7 per attempt.

Greatness Past: During his POY campaign as a junior in 2012, Bentley completed 59 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions while amassing 4,718 yards through the air. He has already thrown for more than 10,000 yards in his career and completed better than 65 percent of his passes as a three-year varsity starter.

Greatness Future: Bentley has verbally committed to play football at Old Dominion University.
