From many, there will be one. While there’s no guarantee contending athletes will win their state at this point in the season, a number of elite performers are making a case for Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year consideration. Here’s the scoop the latest top candidate.
Senior right-handed pitcher, Milford (Mass.)
Greatness Present: A two-time Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year, Smith has come out firing again as a senior.
The 5-foot-8 right-hander has pitched four no-hitters, including each of her last three outings, in six starts so far this spring. Smith owns a 6-0 record and a 0.18 ERA with 84 strikeouts against just two walks, leading the Scarlet Hawks (6-0) to another perfect start to their season. She has allowed only three hits in 38 innings-pitched.
Smith has also batted .333 with four RBI in 21 at-bats.
Greatness Past: As a junior, Smith led Milford to a 25-0 record and the 2012 Division I state title. She finished 24-0 on the mound with a 0.08 ERA and 359 strikeouts against 29 walks in 167 innings-pitched last spring. Smith also batted .462 with 40 RBI and nine home runs as a junior, capturing her second Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year honor in three prep seasons.
Greatness Future: Smith has signed to play for Kentucky.
