From many, there will be one. And while there’s still no guarantee contending athletes will win their own state at this point in the season, a number of elite performers are making a case for Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year consideration. Here’s the scoop on the latest top candidate.

Bobby Portis

Greatness Present: All Bobby Portis does is win. The 6-foot-9 forward led Hall to its fourth straight state title this year, pacing the Warriors over Jonesboro (Ark.) in the Class 6A finale, 34-33. For the season, Portis averaged 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots per game. He was selected to both the Jordan Brand Classic and McDonald’s All-American Game.

Greatness Past: Ranked the No. 13 recruit in the Class of 2013 by ESPN, Portis also wins in the offseason. He was the MVP of the 2012 AAU National Championships, leading the Arkansas Wings to the title.

Greatness Future: Portis has signed with Arkansas.
