Chip LaBarca Jr. will not return as Toms River High School North head football coach this fall, school officials said Friday morning.

James Hauenstein, the Toms River Regional assistant superintendent of schools, said the decision is in reference to the increased workload on school administrators through the`state Department of Education's regulations involving adminstrative duties.

LaBarca who was Toms River North's head coach the past seven seasons, is an assistant prinicipal at Toms River North. He declined to comment.

Toms River North went 50-22 under LaBarca with a 12-0 NJSIAA South Group IV championship in 2007 and Shore Conference Class A South championships in 2007 and 2008. The 2007 team is the only Toms River North team to have gone unbeaten.

The Mariners had six winning seasons under LaBarca with four appearances in the NJSIAA playoffs. Toms River North was 6-4 in 2012 and qualified for the South Group V playoffs.

Toms River Regional Schools District Athletic Director Joe Arminio said he thinks there will not be a lack of applicants for the job.

"I think it's an attractive job with a program that, for the most part has been a winning one," Arminio said.

Toms River North has won five NJSIAA sectional titles in its history. Three of them came during the highly-successful 16-year tenure of Bob Nani from 1989-2004.

LaBarca, the son of former highly-successful Toms River South and Keansburg head coach Chip LaBarca Sr., was a standout wide receiver for his father at Toms River South in the late 1980s and then a wide receiver at Penn State in the early 1990s.

He was the head coach at Lakewood for two seasons in 1997 and 1998. His Lakewood teams went 7-12 with an appearance in the South Group III playoffs in 1998.

LaBarca was also an assistant coach at Toms River East, when quarterback Colin Gaynor was setting the Shore Conference's passing records in 1999 and 2000.
