Refugio (Corpus Christi, Texas) junior quarterback Travis Quintanilla puts up big numbers every week. But even for him, last week was amazing.

Quintanilla only threw 15 passes, but a state-record 10 of them went for touchdowns in his team’s 80-0 win over Taft (Texas) on Friday.

Most of the passes were short tosses out of the team’s hurry-up spread offense that then turned into long gains.

“He’s the best quarterback I’ve coached,” Refugio coach Jason Herring said. “He led us to the (state 2A) championship last year. Thank God we still have him for another year.”

Refugio (6-0), which seldom has much competition in its district, has outscored opponents 379-47. Despite a big lead against Taft, Quintanilla threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Herring said he’s less concerned about running up the score than getting his players prepared for the playoffs.

“It’s a tough situation because we’re so much more talented than every team in our district,” Herring said. “If I take my kids out at halftime, they won’t be in shape for the playoffs. Friday, we only had 26 offensive plays, and that’s with me letting the starters play every quarter.”
