What Conway Springs (Kan.) senior quarterback Tanner Wood did Friday won’t likely be topped in the state soon.
Wood broke a 22-year-old state record, running for 659 yards and nine touchdowns, in a 84-56 defeat of Anthony-Harper Chaparral (Anthony, Kan.) on Friday. The old rushing mark was 488 yards, set in 1998 by Claflin’s Kipp Connell.
The national record is 754, set by John Giannantonio of Netcong (N.J.), in 1950. Wood’s rushing total is the highest known this season by a high school player, surpassing the 643 yards by Aloha (Ore.) running back Thomas Tyner. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Wood has said he plans to sign with Kansas State.
