ALL-USA Watch: Josh Morgan

Why Orange Lutheran (Calif.) shortstop Josh Morgan is one of the best in the country.

Even when the season started and shortstop Josh Morgan had only two hits in his first 10 at-bats, he was patient, looking for other ways to help out Orange Lutheran.

“You have to play solid defense and be a good leader, even If you’re not hitting the ball,” Morgan said at the time. “You have to get quality at-bats every time, to get the pitcher’s count up. If you’re hitting the ball hard, why change things?  If it’s going to guys, it’s going to guys. I feel like if you keep the same approach, the hits will come. You have to be patient and just hit the ball hard.”

Fast-forward a month and Morgan is hitting .317 with a .432 on-base percentage and only two strikeouts in 41 at-bats. Those numbers, combined with his defense and leadership, are why the UCLA signee is considered one of the top high school shortstops in the country.

Until the regular-season American Family Insurance ALL-USA baseball team comes out in June, we’re looking at players who have a chance to be on that team.

Morgan’s take: “I feel like I will play shortstop. I’ll have a good fight with anybody that says I need to move. I’ve done a lot to stay at shortstop. Whatever I need to do to stay there, I’ll do that. That’s my favorite position and it’s a good leadership position. Hopefully it will take me far.”
