Arkeel Newsome breaks Connecticut high school career rushing record

UConn commit had one of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week

Ansonia running back Arkeel Newsome did something unusual Thursday en route to breaking the Connecticut career rushing record. He played a little bit in the second half.

Because the Chargers have outscored opponents 333-39 while going 6-0, playing Newsome after halftime has been a luxury. But, with two-time defending state champion Ansonia playing Masuk (Monroe) and Newsome close to the state record, he played a little bit in the third quarter. He rushed for 396 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-21 victory to push his career mark to 8,385 yards, averaging 11.71 yards a carry. The old mark was set by another Ansonia back, Alex Thomas, who rushed for 8,279 yards from 2004 to 2007, before playing at Yale.
