COACH OF THE YEAR: Cathy Self-Morgan, Duncanville, Texas

The facts: Her team has won 70 games in a row and back-to-back state 5A titles. Besides the last two titles, she won the 5A state title at Duncanville in 2003. At Westlake (Austin), she won the 4A title in 1993 and 5A titles in 1995 and 1996. She was a star player at Texas in its first threeseasons of women’s varsity basketball. In 35 years as a coach, her record is 957-199. She also coached the 2000 Junior Olympic Trials and in the 2004 and 2010 McDonald’s All American Game.

The streak: We just kept our focus on the right side — keeping the losses at a zero.

Best team: I’ve had a lot of good teams. This one is special because the players have worked so hard and get along off the court.

Game strength: When I challenge them at halftime and they get that fire in their eye. I never have to yell at this group.

Underrated virtue: Focusing on details. They are huge to me. They are underrated by a lot of people. Details and defense are why we win championships.

Best joke: I am not much of a jokester. I usually forget the punch line. My players do laugh when I get things backward. I am renowned for renaming movies. What’s that movie, While You Were Sleeping? I call it When You Woke Up. The players laugh, but they know what I’m talking about.

Favorite meal: I have an iron gut, but with this group, I got really tired of eating wings. That was their pregame meal.

Best basketball advice: Let the kids play. Let them work through it, don’t over-coach.

Favorite teacher: I loved all my teachers. I was a teacher’s pet, and I always found the first row. I knew I wanted to be a teacher-coach in the fifth grade.

Best player I’ve coached: Candace Parker (whom she coached in the 2004 McDonald's All American Game) was exceptional.
