Alexa Efraimson wins Nike Cross Nationals 5K with late kick

Camas (Wash.) junior had one of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week

Alexa Efraimson was sitting in third place with 400 meters to go in Saturday’s Nike Cross Nationals 5K race in Portland, Ore., when she unleashed a big kick.

The junior, from Camas, Wash., passed Elise Cranny of Niwot, Colo., and then Simi Valley, Calif., senior Sarah Baxter, who had won the event the past two years, to win the event in 16 minutes, 50.1 seconds.

Efraimson  leads the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week. The rest of the top performances:

Devin Booker, basketball, Moss Point, Miss.
Senior guard, who has signed with Kentucky, scored 40 points in a 92-71 loss to Ballard (Louisville, Ky.) on Saturday.

Rashaad Penny, football, Norwalk, Calif.
Senior running back ran for 321 yards and five touchdowns, including three of 65 yards or more, to lead Norwalk to a 35-28 defeat of Muir (Pasadena) on Friday.

Clare Powers, volleyball, Archbishop Mitty, San Jose, Calif.
Senior outside hitter had 16 kills to lead the Monarchs to the Division II state title with a 25-20, 25-21, 26-24 defeat of Santiago (Corona) on Saturday.

Senior quarterback led the Crusaders to their second consecutive Division I title, running for five touchdowns and passing for three in a 55-52 defeat of Mentor on Saturday in Canton.

Senior quarterback, who has committed to Oklahoma State, threw eight touchdown passes, a state championship record, in a 62-35 defeat of Stratford (Goose Creek) for the South Carolina 4A-II title on Saturday.

Tamara Simpson, basketball, Portledge, Matinecock, N.Y.
Senior guard led team with 26 points, 17 rebounds and eight steals in a 49-28 defeat of Hunter College High (New York) in the finals of the Columbia Prep Tip-Off Tournament Saturday in New York.

B.J. Taylor, basketball, Boone, Orlando
Senior guard, who has signed with Central Florida, scored 52 points in a 82-72 defeat of Oak Ridge (Orlando) on Thursday. He had 59 points in a win earlier this season against Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs).

Victoria Vivians, basketball, Scott Central, Forest, Miss.
In three games last week, the senior forward averaged 43 points a game. She has signed with Mississippi State.

Taylor “Kai” Wilmot, cross country, North Central, Spokane, Wash.
Senior won the boys title at the Nike Cross Nationals 5K race in Portland, Ore., in an even 15 minutes.
