5. Jim Brown
Hall of Fame running back led the NFL in rushing every year but one during his career and never missed a game. In 2002, he was named as the greatest football player ever by The Sporting News.

Why Him: In high school at Manhasset, N.Y., he lettered in five sports. His senior year, he averaged 14.9 yards a carry in football, 39.6 points a game in basketball and threw two no-hitters in baseball. At Syracuse, he was an All-American in football and lacrosse, was the second-leading scorer for the basketball team as a sophomore and competed in track and field. His senior year, he led the nation in rushing with 986 yards (in eight games) and with 43 goals in lacrosse. In his final regular-season football game against Colgate, he ran for 197 yards and six touchdowns and kicked seven extra points. In the NFL, he led the league in rushing eight times and was named the league MVP four times (1957, 1958, 1963 and 1965). He played his last NFL game when he was only 29, averaging 5.2 yards a carry for his career.
Ultimate Moment: On Nov. 1, 1959, Brown ran for 178 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Cleveland Browns to a 38-31 defeat of the Baltimore Colts.
