Wide receiver Marcus Epps defends basketball

Smack Talk: Edison (Huntington, Calif.) wide receiver Marcus Epps thinks basketball is the best sport

Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) wide receiver Marcus Epps knows that he won’t win any cool points among his teammates for this, but he’s convinced that when it comes to which sport produces the best athletes, basketball is king.

“I just think they do way more athletic things,” Epps said. “And I’m a football player, but I’m just being honest. I think there’s an argument with football, but I think it’s basketball for sure.”

Here are the reasons Epps said he was forced to go against his own sport.

Why did you go against your sport and say the ultimate athlete was in basketball?

“It’s close with football, but basketball players do athletic things on every play, almost. I don’t think there’s another sport that does that.”

For anyone who disagrees, what drill specific to basketball would you like to see them try?

“Any type of scrimmaging.”

What sport comes after basketball in producing the best athletes?

“Football.”

What's the best measure of a true athlete (strength, speed, quickness, agility, etc.)?

“I just think it’s everything. The player that can put it all together and make big plays in big games.”

Who is the best athlete in the sport of basketball, past or present?

“LeBron James.”

What is the best example of something you have seen personally that shows why basketball has the ultimate athlete?

“Just when they dunk on each other. That’s really hard because you’ve got to be able to jump and you’ve got to have strength and the right timing.”
